We’re here to reduce the stigma around substance abuse

NARCAN is a potentially lifesaving medication designed to help reverse the effects of an opioid overdose in minutes, having a rescue kit nearby can make all the difference. Too often, NARCAN isn't readily available to those who need it most. 

Gary Harm Reduction is working to change that and get this medication into the hands of people who use opioids and the people that love them. 

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that can be 50 times stronger than the same amount of heroin and is the #1 drug responsible for accidental overdoses. Fentanyl is frequented laced into other drugs unbeknownst to the user leaving them vulnerable to overdose. Gary Harm Reduction distributes fentanyl test strips which allow the user to test for this deadly drug prior to using. 

Gary Harm Reduction is comprised solely of volunteers and has distributed over 5,000 Narcan kits and have self- reports of 100 overdoses reversed by using the supplies we have distributed. 

We offer low-barrier Narcan, training on overdose prevention and provide treatment referrals, and advocate for just treatment of those who use drugs and/or in recovery. 

We are always looking for more volunteers, people with lived experience to help with distribution and serve on committees in the community regarding policy about substance users.

Education is the cornerstone of Gary Harm Reduction’s work. GHR takes a multi-pronged approach, with a goal of educating the general public, those with substance abuse disorder, family and friends of those with SUD and even local service/treatment providers. 

One of the primary events, Region Recovery Riot is held annually during September, recovery month. RRR serves as a venue to provide education on tactical, practical things like how to administer Narcan as well as more general topics like the basics of harm reduction and reducing stigma. Probably the most important part of the Region Recovery Riot is bringing together the community as a whole in a day of fellowship, love and acceptance.
